The Push for 25% of the Market
Counterpoint Research projects the iPhone Duo will capture 25% of the global foldable market by the end of 2026. Hitting that target requires convincing mainstream buyers to treat the phone as an ultra-premium productivity investment.
The immediate barrier is accessibility. With a base price of $1,999, the Duo sits well above standard flagships. Apple is relying on 24-month financing structures, like its $83-per-month Apple Card plan, to ease the sticker shock. The company also has to prove its computational photography can overcome the physical limits of an under-display sensor. Historically, shooting through a layer of active pixels has severely compromised image clarity, and Apple must ensure the camera software cleanly processes those images for demanding power users.
If the hardware holds up to the software's promise, the Duo justifies its premium by eliminating the need to buy a separate tablet. Pre-orders begin October 16, with the device hitting 70 countries a week later. The foldable smartphone is no longer just an engineering experiment; it is now a fully realized desktop that fits inside a coat pocket.
