About The Specialty
The Specialty is a digital newspaper for people who still believe that reading should feel like a conversation — unhurried, curious, and worth your time.
We write about culture, design, science, and the quiet forces that shape everyday life. Our stories are long enough to say something meaningful and short enough to respect your afternoon.
What we care about
We look for subjects that reward attention — the kind of topics you find yourself thinking about days after you first encountered them. Slow cities, unnamed colors, the mathematics of bread, the fonts that remind you of home. Stories that sit at the intersection of ideas and make you see the ordinary world a little differently.
How we work
Every article begins with a spark — a tweet, a conversation, a stray observation — and grows through research, reporting, and careful writing. We use AI tools to help with research and drafting, but every story is shaped by human editorial judgment. We believe in transparency about our process and honesty about our tools.
The aesthetic
The hand-drawn look of this site is intentional. In a web full of polished templates and identical layouts, we wanted something that felt made — a little rough around the edges, like a notebook you actually use. The sketchy borders, the handwritten accents, and the ink-on-paper palette are our way of saying that imperfection is a feature, not a bug.
