Light transmits without the electrical resistance that plagues copper, promising 3.5x more power efficiency and significantly better reliability for the massive, power-hungry clusters that run our models.

The Nvidia Playbook: Owning the Plumbing

This $4 billion investment follows a familiar and ruthlessly effective Nvidia strategy. Just as they did by securing early access to High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and partnering with CoreWeave to guarantee GPU demand, they are now securing the 'plumbing' of the AI era. By creating privileged access to the advanced lasers manufactured by Coherent and Lumentum, Nvidia is ensuring their own supply while creating a formidable barrier to entry for any competitor trying to catch up.

Looking ahead, this move signals that the next phase of the AI boom will be defined by infrastructure integration. We are moving toward 'co-packaged optics,' where these light-based engines are built directly into the chip packages themselves.
